It’s no secret that I love over the knee boots! They add an instant touch of style to any outfit and are perfect for fall. Over the years I’ve learned a thing or two about how to find the perfect pair of over the knee boots, so today I will be sharing six things that everyone needs to know before investing in a pair of their own!

Price

Price is one of the very first things you should think about before starting your over the knee (OTK) boot shopping journey. OTK boots can be found at multiple price points so figuring out how much you would like to spend before you fall in love with these $798 swoon worthy Stuart Weitzman boots is a good idea. These are my favorite pair and can be found at the reasonable price of $69.90 but are often on sale! I got my first pair on sale for $64.90 and my second pair on sale for $34.99! Remember, the more specific you get with what you want the more flexible you may have to be with your budget.

Shaft Height

To ensure that you purchase over the knee boots that actually go over your knee, make sure you know how high you need them to go. I recommend selecting a pair of boots that go at least 2-3 inches above your knee. For reference I am 5’4 and at the height of my knees I don’t like to go for anything under 21″. The OTK boots pictured above are 21.5″ and are my favorite!

Circumference

A big no-no when it comes to over the knee boots is slouching. To avoid the dreaded slouch you need to purchase OTK boots with the right circumference. This will of course be different for everyone but I like to go for a max circumference of 13″ for my legs. For a better fit look for a pair of boots with laces to help keep them in place or simply wear OTK socks.

Color

The first thought that you probably have when thinking about purchasing OTK boots is what color you want them to be! I recommend starting with colors that will match with everything. I began with black, then taupe, burgundy, and finally charcoal grey.

Heel Height

Know the purpose of your boots before you purchase them. At 1″ the first pair of OTK boots I purchased had a flat heel and were therefore a peace of cake to walk in. I did however get ambitious with the second 3.5″ pair and the first day I wore them I thought to myself “These boots are not made for walking!” Don’t get me wrong, I could get by wearing them for a couple of hours, but definitely not for the whole day. I’m always on my feet so in order to get the most wear out of my boots I always purchase flat heels now.

Details

Finally, the details! As mentioned before, looking for a pair of boots with a lace tie at the top will really help to keep them in place. When it comes to over the knee boots you will find them in mostly suede, leather, or a combination of both. I personally like to go for faux suede. Other details you should consider are fringe, zippers, and buckles.

Not really a fan of over the knee boots because I cannot wear it in my country. But, if we have winter here, I probably would buy some pairs too. Love this chic look! <3

You are such a beauty, girl! I love your burgundy boots and the way you’ve styled them here! I also love all the tips you’ve shared here, which are extremely helpful! I love that you touched on circumference and shaft length because as we know, this varies from brand to brand and they’re both extremely important qualities to consider for the perfect fit, especially when thinking about investing! Thanks so much for sharing, beauty, and I hope you’re having the best week so far!

Thank you for your great tips, Daisi! My favorite pair of OTK boots are almost flat – I can see why you prefer them too! They are so comfy. However, they do start falling as soon as I begin walking. I used to think that it was because they lacked a drawstring at the top, but thanks to you, I see that it is probably a circumference issue. At least I can still wear them with skinny jeans. 🙂 XO

An easy way to fix that is to wear a thick pair of OTK socks. It helps keep your boots and place and keeps you warm! There is also a product on amazon called BootBra that is used to hold up boots. Hope this helps! 🙂
